Sophia Onofriechuk

9 years old | Voloka, Chernovetsky district
Diagnosis: Оsteosarcoma
Child report

Sophia is from a small village in the Chernivtsi region. She bravely fights with her diagnosis for several months, becoming a real challenge for her family. On September 22, 2021, a 9-year-old girl was diagnosed with osteosarcoma.

Cancer did not manifest itself in any way. Within a week, Sophia had a pain in her leg, just above her knee. She limped barely noticeably. Like all children, Sophia is an active girl. The parents thought she perhaps played somewhere and hit her leg.

Grandfather was the first to draw attention. After examining the bruise, he stated that there was possibly something in her leg.

Sophia’s father Vitaly listened to grandfather’s intuition, and they visited an orthopedist the next day. After the X-ray, oncology was suspected. Then they had an emergency trip to Kyiv, a CT scan of the leg, and the oncosurgeon’s answer: “We can try, but we do not guarantee anything.”

It’s even scary to imagine what Sophia’s parents felt when they heard these words. It’s like falling into the abyss, where you want to cling to a solution that guarantees the right choice.

Father Vitaly made an explicit decision to get treatment only abroad. Israel immediately became the primary choice, as family’s friends have already received successful treatment in Tel Aviv

Today, Sophia and her family are undergoing treatment in one of the best medical centers in the country, in the “Sheba” clinic. She had already received the first course of chemotherapy.

This is only the beginning of a difficult, but we hope successful path. Sophia has several chemotherapy courses and surgery ahead.

She is strong and believes that everything will be over soon, her hair will grow back, and her leg will no longer hurt. Sophia is little but a real fighter! Like her parents’ life, her life was divided into “before” and “after.” So, we should fight for Sophia’s life!

Treatment in the clinic is expensive, so we ask all those who are not indifferent to help 9-year-old Sophia overcome a challenging diagnosis.

We pray for the girl’s fast recovery
